If you’re planning a trip to photograph Leeds<\/a>, you might be wondering which locations offer the best photography opportunities. With a city as vibrant and historic as Leeds, there\u2019s no shortage of captivating spots. The city offers a mixture of modern architecture and heritage sites, providing a wealth of visual diversity for any photographer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While many city centres, including Leeds, can appear somewhat uniform with modern shopping centres and high-rise buildings, there are plenty of hidden gems for keen photographers. Do keep in mind, though, that some shopping centres may restrict photography, particularly if you’re using a tripod. In fact, it\u2019s reported that several major UK shopping malls, including those in Leeds, have restrictions on photography, particularly for commercial purposes. Still, Leeds has some of the best places for photography near you, especially if you’re keen on urban landscapes, architecture, and river views. To make the most of your photography experience in the city, consider exploring different times of day for varying light conditions, especially during golden hour. Having photographed Leeds<\/a> extensively since 2003, I\u2019ve gathered countless experiences from every corner of this wonderful city. The following locations are some of the must-see spots I recommend to any photographer visiting Leeds. Whether you’re interested in architectural marvels or tranquil riverside scenes, these places offer fantastic potential for your portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of these photos are from my archives<\/a>, compiled over nearly two decades of working in and around Leeds. Remember, the time of day, the weather, and even the season can greatly influence your shots, so it’s worth visiting some of these places more than once. These are a few of my personal favourites from hundreds of visits to the city centre, all unique in their own way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The Canal and River Aire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Like every major UK city, Leeds has a river running through its heart\u2014the River Aire. It’s joined by the Leeds-Liverpool Canal right next to the train station, making it easily accessible. From here, the river flows eastwards, eventually joining the Humber estuary. The waterways offer a range of opportunities for capturing stunning river and canal scenes, perfect for building your portfolio. The riverbanks also provide fantastic spots for capturing the hustle and bustle of Leeds\u2019 dynamic urban life, from joggers to boats gliding by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the highlights for photographers is the stretch west of the city centre, where the canal offers great opportunities for reflective water shots, especially during the golden hour. Brewery Wharf, a short walk from the centre, features an iconic footbridge that\u2019s ideal for capturing dynamic architectural images. Finally, to the east, near the Royal Armouries, the scenery changes to a more industrial setting, offering a contrast between modern urban development and historic remnants of Leeds\u2019 industrial past. Leeds’ riverside areas are some of the best places for urban and architectural photography<\/a> in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Park Square<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located just a few minutes\u2019 walk from the city centre, Park Square is a surprisingly tranquil spot amidst the urban sprawl. This Georgian square features manicured lawns and is bordered by elegant buildings. One standout is St Paul\u2019s House, a magnificent structure with a Moorish design that\u2019s unique to Leeds. It\u2019s the perfect backdrop for a variety of photographic styles, from street photography to architectural shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Park Square is especially beautiful in spring when the flowers bloom, and the sunlight filters through the trees. The area is also a popular spot for lunchtime breaks, which adds a human element to your photos. You can capture candid moments of city workers enjoying the green space or focus purely on the architectural details surrounding the square. It\u2019s one of the lesser-known photography gems in Leeds, ideal for those seeking more peaceful surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Leeds City Markets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Leeds City Markets on Vicar Lane is one of the architectural highlights of the city, and for good reason. Built in 1904, the building\u2019s ornate Victorian fa\u00e7ade, complete with domes and cherubs, is a feast for the eyes and an irresistible subject for photographers. The intricate details of the exterior make this one of the most photogenic buildings in Leeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The markets are still a bustling centre for commerce today, and inside, you\u2019ll find a variety of stalls selling everything from fresh produce to vintage goods. 4. The Corn Exchange<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Leeds Corn Exchange, designed by the renowned Victorian architect Cuthbert Brodrick in 1864, is one of the most distinctive buildings in the city. Its striking circular design and intricate interior make it a popular spot for photographers. Today, the building houses a range of independent shops and eateries, but it\u2019s the architecture that truly steals the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photographers will find plenty to capture, both inside and out. The exterior is grand and imposing, while the interior boasts a spectacular domed ceiling with natural light flooding in, creating the perfect conditions for architectural photography.
