{"id":13698,"date":"2023-01-13T16:45:38","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T16:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/?p=13698"},"modified":"2024-09-05T19:56:19","modified_gmt":"2024-09-05T19:56:19","slug":"how-youtube-changed-my-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/how-youtube-changed-my-life\/%20","title":{"rendered":"How Youtube Changed My Life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Miserable Telly Dragging You Down?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The relentless negativity of broadcast media<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/4\/41\/BBC_Logo_2021.svg\/1000px-BBC_Logo_2021.svg.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve found this, but in the last few years, broadcast TV is filled with relentless negativity, pessimism, doom and gloom and general misery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take channels like the BBC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve long been a massive fan and advocate of theirs, watching it for as long as I can remember. Things like Not the 9 O&#8217;Clock news, The Young Ones, Only Fools and Horses, Parkinson, Question Time&#8230; all things I look back on fondly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In these last few years though I&#8217;ve found myself feeling increasingly depressed from its unremitting bleak output. I\u2019ve even switched Radio 4 off, after decades of dedicated listening.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ok, maybe it&#8217;s reflecting the world around us and it really is that miserable out there. But to be reminded of it constantly, without any glimmer of hope or positivity, is bound to drive us all into a negative frame of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/5-things-every-portrait-photographer-needs-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\">thing you need<\/a> if you\u2019re running a business &#8211; finish a long day, then watch everything wrong in the world discussed in minute detail. Where is the inspiration?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay, so that was a very depressing opening to a blog\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Streaming The Solution?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cookielaw.org\/logos\/dd6b162f-1a32-456a-9cfe-897231c7763c\/4345ea78-053c-46d2-b11e-09adaef973dc\/Netflix_Logo_PMS.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abandoning broadcast TV, I started to look elsewhere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the streaming services like Netflix and Disney didn&#8217;t really have a lot I would choose to watch. Existing series with ten 30-hour long seasons to catch up on aren\u2019t for me, I like stories to begin and end in a single sitting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also like information-packed viewing, which is both entertaining and from which you actually learn something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Youtube Reviews<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Top 6 Best Cat Doors (We Tried Them All)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e-U6BV6zbIA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a long time I&#8217;ve used YouTube for purchasing decisions, watching geeks around the world, compare the features of:-&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cameras.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gimbals,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>microphones&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>headphones.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ActiFry and air fryers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Software for everything<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor calibration devices,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sofas&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cars.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Memory cards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flea treatment for cats.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There really is something for everyone out there, I\u2019d recommend watching a couple of reviews before making a purchase &#8211; you\u2019ll definitely learn something prior to getting your thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These videos are getting slicker and more entertaining, to the point where you can fill a whole evening with \u201cstuff\u201d off youtube &#8211; not just reviews either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Casting to TV<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"How To Use Chromecast (2021)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WOGWVrngjiI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have a Chromecast, a dongle you pop in to an HDMI socket in the back of the television which allows you to send (cast) anything you have found on my phone to the television. I can watch Youtube (and many other services) on the big screen just like a normal TV, but don\u2019t have to endure the pain of finding content with a television remote control. You just use your mobile phone<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m sure Apple TV is exactly the same if you&#8217;re an iPhone user &#8211; and some smart TVs can be cast to without the Chromecast &#8211; worth investigating for your platform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chromecast &#8220;just works&#8221; if you are an Andoid phone user <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warning!!&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Youtube has an algorithm which finds \u201cmore of the same\u201d for you &#8211; so if you are into golf, say, it\u2019ll find you lots of golf clips and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/dehancer-review-transforming-digital-photos-with-authentic-film-emulation\/\" title=\"Dehancer Review: Transforming Digital Photos with Authentic Film Emulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"59\" target=\"_blank\">tips<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can however also take you down a negative rabbit warren if you start looking at negative stuff &#8211; just be careful you don\u2019t get radicalised! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back to the story\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2 Recent Obsessions <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Firstly I\u2019ve become interested in how to <strong>edit my Drone footage<\/strong> to make it look interesting and cinematic, and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Secondly, after 30 years of \u201cdipping my toe in\u201d,&nbsp; have decided to up my game with <strong>dance music production<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both of these are massive subjects with daunting learning curves, terms I\u2019ve never heard of, tools I get lost in, concepts I find baffling\u2026I\u2019ve climbed that mountain before learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/fast-photo-editing-software-luminar-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\">photo editing<\/a>, using Photoshop, I know it can be done, but boy\u2026 a lot of work!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But what I found On YouTube was a whole world of experts sharing their knowledge &#8211; for FREE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know some videos are poor &#8211; I used to find videos with dreadful \u201crobot voices\u201d instead of people talking, or worse, screen captures with text on the screen instead of them talking! (FREE Ableton Project &amp; Samples) ????\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S9u_nYLZFjo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use your \u201cdowntime\u201d wisely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I break for a coffee and pop the TV on, it opens YouTube instead of the broadcast channels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will have curated a list of all the latest videos from the channels I subscribe to, and new channels covering topics I like. A quick scroll and you\u2019ll find things you\u2019re into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I want to learn something cool about video editing, I\u2019ll type in the magic words \u201cDavinci Resolve 18\u201d (my editor) and up will pop new clips from the usual presenters (and ones I don\u2019t know). In seconds they\u2019ll be teaching me:-&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>something brand new in the latest release,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or how to make your voice sound better,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or adding colour into the shadows of a drone video,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or 10 essential shortcuts to making your life easier\u2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s one from Scotland on editing Drone footage &#8211; you get the idea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Colour Grade ANY DJI Drone Footage In SECONDS (including DLog &amp; D-Cinelike)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fG95ikKV_AE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you find the right content creators (and YOUTUBE helps suggest the most popular) teaching is done in an engaging way, something you can casually watch and absorb led on your sofa, rather than an open university-style lecture where you need a pen and pad to take notes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Another example &#8211; Music Theory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@DavidBennettPiano\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@DavidBennettPiano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Bennett Piano<\/a> &#8211; a young guy who regularly discusses music theory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/Cf8w4DDrSQg\/maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve been playing the piano since the age of seven, I never had lessons and just learnt what the dots, Italian terms and music-squiggles mean from books so I could learn songs. No \u201ctheory\u201d as such &#8211; you play the notes, but don\u2019t understand \u201cwhy\u201d they work &#8211; they just work. Not everyone needs to understand grammar to speak English &#8211; same thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a weekly basis, David Bennett produces a video talking music, recently there were:-&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>popular chord sequences &#8211; which you can nick and use \ud83d\ude09<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>different modes of music &#8211; never knew what Lydian Mode meant!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>interesting time signatures &#8211; name some songs in 10:8 time? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/hiring-a-photographer-7-things-youre-really-buying\/\" target=\"_blank\">things which I&#8217;ve never really<\/a> thought about, but when presented in an entertaining and simple way, makes me a better musician with new knowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Songs that use the Circle of Fifths progression\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-DQJmicTFGQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Another example &#8211; synthesizers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always been fascinated with synthesizers.&nbsp;Especially old ones, with lots of knobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.musicgateway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Copy-of-800-x-500-Blog-Post-5-4.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s been a passion of mine since the 80s when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/top-social-media-trends-to-watch-for-in-2024-embracing-the-future-of-digital-engagement\/\" title=\"Top Social Media Trends to Watch for in 2024: Embracing the Future of Digital Engagement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">watching Top<\/a><strong> of the Pops<\/strong>. I would always dream of playing a Roland Jupiter 8 or an Emulator 2 or a Yamaha DX7 or a Roland D50, all of which you would see every band using at 7 PM on a Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are channels dedicated purely to Synthesizers, <strong>like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@AlexBallMusic\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Ball<\/a>,<\/strong> who regularly explores obscure old technology or the very latest kit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He brings it into his studio to demonstrates how it works, finds interesting and unique sounds, explains its history and then creates a song with it. It\u2019s all done with lots of great camera work and engaging editing\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Production values are almost up to broadcast media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Land of the Rising Sound | A Roland Retrospective\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JcbpRMZIQ8g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Another example &#8211;&nbsp; making EDM (House) music<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have many channels showing you how to use Ableton\/Logic\/Cakewalk\/ProTools to create dance music &#8211; from the UK and USA mainly, but also South African, Poland, Russia, and Germany &#8211; so you get different styles. perhaps Eighties Chicago House, or maybe like Daft Punk, or perhaps Fatboy Slim &#8211; showing us how to make the sounds, drum beats, chords, bass, melody, vocals&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others also take you, step by step, through how they made the beat &#8211; choosing the right kick drum, snare and high hat for this style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019ll describe in detail how they chop up vocal loops and make things pump with Sidechain compression &#8211; there\u2019s a LOT going on&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@abletontips\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@abletontips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABLETON TIPS &#8211; a group of producers sharing their secrets<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some videos are an hour long, some 5 minutes, all great quality and well explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Making a complete Track START TO FINISH Ableton Live 11 | Vol.2 | Beginner, Intermediate\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cdHmlehgKPs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; Go back each day and find the new channels YOUTUBE suggests, all this builds the breadth of creators you see daily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third, remember you influence what pops up in your stream. Use your LIKE button on anything you enjoyed, use the SUBSCRIBE button if you think you&#8217;ll enjoy more of their videos, and set the NOTIFICATION level to ALL if you want all their new videos to pop up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be ruthless in culling stuff you didn&#8217;t like <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Channels need to keep you entertained &#8211; if it\u2019s turned out to be dull, unsubscribe!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Channels you can relate to &#8211; if you don\u2019t like the presenter\u2026 unsubscribe!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Channels to expand your knowledge &#8211; some may be too advanced and you get lost, some too simple &#8211; unsubscribe!&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s just tapping your phone, no big class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ALSO if you have a phone contract, some allow entertainment in the packages &#8211; my Vodafone contract gets me PREMIUM for \u00a37\/month, so I get Ad Free Youtube and
