What makes it commercial is what the pictures are used for — not what’s in them. A photograph of a bowl of soup is food photography when it’s on a menu and commercial photography when it’s selling the restaurant.

That’s why the job varies so much. I’ve spent fifteen years shooting across most of these categories, and the honest answer is that each one changes the kit, the timings and the way the day runs. This guide walks through the main types, what actually happens on each kind of shoot, and how to work out which ones your business needs.

What are the types of commercial photography?

The main types of commercial photography are:

Headshot photography — individual portraits for websites, LinkedIn and press

Product photography — items shot for e-commerce, catalogues and packaging

Food and drink photography — dishes for menus, delivery platforms and social

Fashion photography — clothing and accessories on models or flat

Event photography — conferences, awards, launches and corporate days

Branding and personal brand photography — a library of images covering the people, place and process behind a business

Real estate and architectural photography — interiors and exteriors of buildings and spaces

Construction and industrial photography — live sites, plant, manufacturing and progress records

Drone and aerial photography — elevated stills and video of sites, buildings and land

Corporate photography — the mixed bag of headshots, offices and candids used across annual reports and recruitment

Lifestyle photography — products and services shown in real use, in a natural setting

Most businesses need two or three of these, not all eleven. The defining thing is the end use. A portrait shot for someone’s mantelpiece is portrait photography; the same portrait on a company’s About page is commercial photography.

That matters practically, because it changes what you’re buying. On a commercial job you’re not just paying for someone to turn up with a camera. You’re paying for images licensed for the uses you need, shot to a brief, and delivered in the formats and crops your marketing actually runs on.

Why do professional headshots matter?

A headshot is usually the first picture anyone sees of you. It sits on your website, your LinkedIn, the conference programme and the email signature. It’s doing a job whether you’ve thought about it or not.

The thing most people underestimate is consistency. A team page where everyone was shot separately, on different phones, in different light, looks scruffy no matter how good the individual pictures are. Shooting a whole team in one session with one lighting setup fixes that — and it’s the reason I keep a record of the setup, so someone who joins in six months can be matched to the rest.

On the day it’s a portable studio in a meeting room or a corner of the office. Each person needs a few minutes, not thirty seconds — most people need a moment to stop looking like they’re being processed. Budget around fifteen to twenty people in a morning if you want them to look human.

<picture></picture>

What does product photography involve?

Product photography splits into two jobs that look similar and aren’t. There’s the clean pack shot — item on white, cut out, consistent angle and scale across the whole range. And there’s the styled shot, where the product sits in a set that suggests who it’s for.

The clean version is more technical than people expect. Colour accuracy is the bit that bites: if the blue on your website isn’t the blue in the box, you get returns. That means controlled lighting, a colour reference in the frame, and profiling rather than eyeballing it in post.

The practical planning question is how many SKUs and how many angles each. Forty products at three angles is a very different day to six products shot properly. Get that number straight before anything else, because it drives the whole schedule.

What makes food photography different?

Food dies. That’s the whole problem in one word. Ice cream slumps, herbs wilt, steam stops, and the sear on a steak looks its best for about ninety seconds. Everything about a food shoot is built around getting the shot before the plate gives up.

So the kitchen and the camera work together. The dish gets plated last, brought straight over, and shot against a setup that’s already lit and framed using a stand-in. On restaurant jobs I’ll usually shoot in the venue rather than a studio — the room’s own light and surfaces are part of what you’re selling.

Worth knowing: menu shots and social shots want different crops. Menus tend to want the dish square-on and tight; Instagram wants space around it and room for a caption. Ask for both and you get both.

What happens on a fashion shoot?

Fashion is the type with the most people on it. Beyond the photographer you’re often looking at a model, a stylist, and hair and makeup — and someone whose only job is steaming garments, because creases show up brutally on camera.

There’s a split here too. E-commerce fashion is repetitive and precise: same pose, same distance, same light, so the whole range hangs together on a grid. Campaign work is the opposite — a location, a mood, and far fewer usable frames from a longer day.

If you’re a smaller brand, the honest advice is to do the e-commerce shots properly first. They’re the ones that actually sell the clothes.

<picture></picture>

What do you get from event photography?

Events are the one type where there is no second go. The keynote happens once, the award gets handed over once, and if you missed it you missed it. That changes how you work — you’re ahead of the running order all day rather than reacting to it.

Technically it’s usually a low-light problem. Conference rooms and awards dinners are dim and lit in odd colours, so it’s fast lenses, high ISO, and flash used sparingly enough that nobody in the room resents you.

The bit clients most often forget to ask for: a small selection edited and sent the same evening, while the event is still live on social. The full set can follow in a few days. Also give me a shot list — speakers, sponsor branding, the specific handshake somebody needs for a press release.

What is branding photography for?

Branding photography is the one that solves the “we’ve got nothing to post” problem. Rather than a single image for a single purpose, you’re building a library — the people, the workspace, the process, the details — that you draw on for a year.

It usually runs as a half or full day, several changes of clothes, two or three locations or areas. The output is deliberately varied: verticals for stories, wide shots with room for text overlay, close details for filler posts.

For a one-person business this overlaps heavily with personal branding photography — same idea, with you as the subject rather than the company.

How does real estate and architectural photography work?

The technical signature of this type is straight verticals. Point a wide lens up at a building and the walls lean inwards, which reads as amateur immediately. Fixing it means either a tilt-shift lens or shooting with correction in mind and leaving room in the frame for it.

The other half of the job is light and timing. Interiors usually mean balancing the room’s own lighting against the windows so you don’t end up with a blown-out white rectangle where the view should be. Exteriors are a time-of-day question — a building that looks flat at noon can look excellent an hour before sunset.

And a boring truth: tidying takes longer than shooting. Bins, cables, stray chairs, a mug on a windowsill. Anything left in the frame has to come out in post, which costs more than moving it would have.

<picture></picture>

What is construction and industrial photography?

This is photography on live sites — groundworks, civils, manufacturing floors, plant rooms. It’s a category most guides leave out, and it’s the one I do most of.

The difference is that the site comes first and the pictures come second. Every visit starts with an induction and a briefing, full PPE, and a plan agreed with the site manager for where I can and can’t be while work continues. Nothing gets moved or staged that would compromise how the site is running.

The most useful thing this type produces is a progress sequence. Shooting from the same marked positions every month gives you a set of images that line up as a genuine before-and-during-and-after — which is worth a great deal in tender documents, funding updates and case studies. My background is a civil engineering degree, which mostly means I know what I’m looking at and don’t need the process explained twice.

There’s more on this over on the construction photography pages.

When do you need drone and aerial photography?

Aerial work earns its place when the thing you’re photographing is too big or too spread out to read from the ground. Sites, roofs, land parcels, road schemes, a finished building in its setting.

It’s the one type with a legal layer attached. Commercial drone work in the UK needs the right authorisation, airspace checks before the flight, and a risk assessment for the site. I hold a CAA PDRA01 Operational Authorisation, which is the permission most commercial sites and their insurers will ask to see before you’re allowed to put anything in the air.

Practically, it also pairs well with ground-level work on the same visit — an aerial for context, then detail shots on foot. Details are on the drone photography pages.

What does corporate photography cover?

Corporate photography is less a single style and more a bundle. A typical corporate shoot mixes headshots, shots of the office or workspace, and candids of people actually working — meetings, screens, conversations that look like conversations rather than three people pointing at a laptop.

Those images end up spread across annual reports, recruitment pages, tender submissions and press. Because the uses are so varied, it’s worth shooting wider than feels necessary — a design team will thank you for space to crop into.

If headshots are the main event, doing the whole team together in one go is what makes the difference. I’ve written up why that works in why corporate headshots come out better when you bring your team.

What is lifestyle photography in a commercial context?

Lifestyle photography shows the product or service in use, in a setting that feels real. Someone drinking the coffee rather than the cup on a white background. The point is to let the customer picture themselves in it.

The choice that decides the tone is models or your own people. Models are easier to direct and look more polished. Your own staff look more like your business and tend to land better with local audiences — at the cost of a slower day, because most people need a while to relax.

What’s the difference between commercial and advertising photography?

People use these interchangeably and they’re not quite the same thing.

Commercial photography

Advertising photography

What it sells

A specific product, service or organisation

An idea or a feeling attached to a brand

Typical use

Website, brochure, catalogue, social, tender

Campaigns, billboards, paid media

Team size

Often photographer and client

Usually an agency, art director and crew

Licence

Commonly broad but ordinary business use

Often specific, time-limited and expensive

Advertising photography is a subset of commercial photography, effectively. All advertising photography is commercial; plenty of commercial photography never appears in an advert.

Who owns the photographs, and what can you do with them?

Because commercial photography is defined by end use, licensing is part of what you’re buying — and it’s the bit that catches people out.

Under UK copyright law the photographer owns the copyright by default, and the client is granted a licence to use the images. For most of my commercial work that licence is broad enough to cover normal business use — website, social, print, press — without anyone needing to check back.

Where it’s worth asking the question is paid advertising, packaging, and resale. Those are the uses that are often carved out separately. It costs nothing to ask up front, and it saves an awkward conversation later.

How do you choose a commercial photographer?

The single most useful filter is whether the photographer has shot your type of work before, not whether their portfolio is pretty. A commercial photographer who lives in food styling will not be the right pick for a live civils site, and neither of them is automatically the right pick for forty pack shots.

Worth asking before you book:

Can I see a full job, not just the highlights? Ten strong frames from one shoot tells you far more than a hundred greatest hits.

What’s included in the licence? Covered above, and cheaper to sort now than later.

How many edited images do I get, and when? Turnaround varies enormously between types.

Are you insured, and can you work on our site? Public liability as standard; site work also needs the inductions and PPE.

Who owns the raw files? Usually the photographer. Ask if that matters to you.

Most of a good commercial photographer’s value shows up before the shutter goes — in the planning, the shot list and knowing what the images have to do once they leave the camera.

How do you work out which types your business needs?

Start from where the pictures are going, not from the list. Write down the places you actually need images — website homepage, product pages, LinkedIn, a brochure, a tender — and the types you need fall out of that on their own.

Selling physical products? Product photography first, lifestyle second.

Selling a service? Headshots and branding photography do most of the work.

Food or hospitality? Food photography, plus interiors of the room.

Property, construction or civils? Architectural and construction photography, with aerial where the scale needs it.

Running an event? Event photography, booked well ahead — good dates go early.

One more thing worth saying plainly: a single session covering two or three types on the same day is almost always better value than booking them separately across the year. The setup time is the expensive bit, not the shutter.

The short version

Commercial photography is defined by what the images are used for, not what’s in them.

There are eleven main types, and most businesses need two or three of them.

Each type changes the kit, the crew and the timings — a food shoot and a site visit have almost nothing in common.

Work backwards from where the pictures are going, and check what the licence covers before you book.

If you’re not sure which of these you actually need, it’s usually a ten-minute conversation rather than a long one. They’re grouped by what the images are used for rather than by subject matter.

Is wedding photography commercial photography?

No. A wedding is shot for the people in it, not to sell anything, so it sits outside commercial photography. It becomes commercial the moment those images are used to advertise the venue or the florist.

What’s the difference between commercial and advertising photography?

Advertising photography is a subset of commercial photography aimed at campaigns and paid media, usually with an agency involved and a tighter, more expensive licence. Commercial photography covers the broader everyday business uses — websites, brochures, social and tender documents.

How much does commercial photography cost in the UK?

It depends far more on the type and the scope than on the hours. A morning of team headshots, forty product shots and a full day on a live construction site are three genuinely different jobs. The things that move the price are the number of images, the crew needed, and how the pictures will be licensed.

Do I own the photos my business pays for?

Under UK copyright law the photographer usually retains copyright and grants you a licence to use the images. Most commercial licences cover ordinary business use such as your website, social media and print. Paid advertising, packaging and resale are worth checking separately before the shoot.

Related Reading

<picture></picture>

Why Corporate Headshots Come Out Better When You Bring Your Team

<picture></picture>

Why Construction Projects Need Photography

<picture></picture>

The ROI of Professional Business Photography in Leeds

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
"name": "What are the main types of commercial photography?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
"text": "The main types are headshot, product, food and drink, fashion, event, branding, real estate and architectural, construction and industrial, drone and aerial, corporate, and lifestyle photography.
