Point a camera at a machine. But anyone who has tried it with a phone knows a factory floor can look chaotic, dark and a bit grim in photos, even when it’s a well-run, safe, impressive operation in real life. The job is to make the photos match the reality.

Quick answer: how do you get good factory photography?

Decide where the photos will be used first: website, bids, recruitment, trade press.

Plan the shoot around your production schedule, not the other way round.

Sort out the site induction, PPE and any no-camera areas before the day.

Include your people. A factory with nobody in it looks closed.

Cover processes, machinery, people, product and the building in one visit, so you get a full image library rather than a handful of shots.

What does a factory or industrial photographer actually photograph?

A good manufacturing shoot is a set of different shots that each do a job. The table below is roughly how I break a factory day down. Not every site needs every row, and some need things that aren’t on it.

Type of shot

What it shows

Where it gets used

Production line, wide

Scale, order and how the site runs

Website, capability statements, bids

Machinery and process detail

Precision, quality, what you can actually make

Sales material, trade press, LinkedIn

People at work

Skilled staff, safe working, a live operation

Recruitment, careers page, PR

Quality checks

Standards and attention to detail

Bids, client presentations

Finished product

The thing the customer is buying

Website, brochures, social media

Staff portraits and team shots

Who the client will deal with

About page, LinkedIn, press releases

Exterior and aerial views

The size of the site, the yard, access and location

Website header, bids, investor material

I’ve photographed production lines, quality checks, plant and machinery, and aerial yard views for manufacturers including Marshalls and Aarsleff. The common thread is that the photos are built around what the client needs to show a buyer who has never set foot on the site.

How do you photograph a factory without stopping production?

You plan around the line. Before the shoot, I want to know which areas run when, which machines look most impressive in action, and when shift changes, deliveries or cleaning happen. Then the day is sequenced so each area gets photographed while it’s running well, instead of everything stopping for the camera.

It’s the same planning, PPE and site-induction process as a construction shoot, just fitted around a production schedule rather than a build programme. I work around your people, not through them. Most of the time staff carry on with their jobs and I fit in around them.

[ADE: one or two sentences about a real factory job, for example Marshalls or Aarsleff: what the brief was, how the shoot fitted around production, and what the images ended up being used for.]

What should you sort out before the photographer arrives?

A short checklist saves a lot of standing around on the day. Here’s what I ask about when a manufacturing job is booked.

Induction: who runs it, how long it takes, and whether it can be done first thing.

PPE: what the site requires in each area (boots, hi-vis, eye and hearing protection) and what you provide.

A site contact: one person who knows the production plan and can walk the site with me.

No-camera areas: customer products, prototypes or processes that can’t be shown. Flag them before the day, not halfway through it.

Staff: who is happy to be photographed, and a heads-up to the teams so nobody is surprised.

Tidy-up: a quick sweep of the areas you most want to show. It makes more difference than any amount of editing.

How do you make factory staff comfortable in front of the camera?

Most people on a factory floor didn’t sign up to be photographed, and some would rather be anywhere else. That’s normal. I direct people the way you’d direct a mate: a bit of banter, clear instructions, and photographing them doing the job they know rather than posing. People relax fast when they’re doing something they’re good at.

For the photos where someone needs to look at the camera, like portraits for the website or LinkedIn, I keep it quick and set up nearby so nobody is away from their station for long. If you need a full set of staff headshots too, that can go in the same day; there’s more on that on the corporate and team photography page.

One thing worth doing before the day: tell your staff what the photos are for and where they’ll appear, and give anyone who’d rather not be in them an easy way to say so. A recognisable photo of someone counts as personal data under UK GDPR, so it’s worth a quick word with whoever looks after data protection in your business before the images go on the website or into marketing.

Can you cover machinery, people and the building in one visit?

Yes, and it’s usually the most cost-effective way to do it. One visit can cover processes and machinery, people at work, staff portraits and the exterior. Where height genuinely helps, like showing the size of a yard or a site from the road, aerial photos can be added on the same day. Drone work is there when it earns its place, not bolted on to every job. More on that on the drone photography page.

What do you get at the end of a factory shoot?

A proper image library, not a handful of hero shots. The aim is a broad set covering wide views, detail, people and product, so your marketing, sales and HR teams can each find what they need. As a rough guide, a full day tends to produce a library of 100 or more usable images, though it depends on the site and the brief.

You get broad business usage rights for marketing, the website, social media, PR, editorial, tenders and internal use. Copyright stays with McFade Photography unless we agree otherwise. The delivery date is agreed when the job is booked. If you’re planning how the images will be used across the business, my post on planning a shoot that gives you a useful image library goes into that in more detail.

Do you need a specialist industrial photographer?

You need an industrial photographer: someone who is comfortable on a working site and understands what the image needs to say. A photographer used to weddings or studio portraits can take a nice picture, but a factory has its own rules: inductions, PPE, moving machinery, noise and people with jobs to get on with.

My background helps here. I’ve been doing commercial photography since 2010 and I have a civil engineering degree, so I tend to understand what’s being made and why it matters before I start pointing a camera at it. You can see more of the industrial and construction side of the work on the construction and manufacturing photography page.

Where do you cover industrial photography in Yorkshire?

McFade Photography is based in Leeds and covers Yorkshire and the North of England as standard. For full-day manufacturing and industrial jobs elsewhere in the UK, the travel is often worth it, so just ask.

FAQ

Do you need to stop production for a factory photoshoot?

Usually not. A well-planned shoot works around the production schedule, photographing each area when it is running at its best, rather than asking the line to stop for the camera.

Can one photographer cover machinery, staff and the building on the same day?

Yes. I can combine process and machinery shots, people at work, staff portraits and exterior or aerial views in a single booking, so one visit gives you a full image library.

Who owns the photos from a factory shoot?

You get broad business usage rights covering marketing, website, social media, PR, editorial, tender and internal use. I’m based in Leeds and cover Yorkshire and the North of England as standard, and take on manufacturing and industrial work elsewhere in the UK where the job justifies the travel.

How much does factory photography cost?

It depends on the size of the site, how many areas and people need covering, and whether aerial work is useful.
