{"id":1838,"date":"2012-04-04T15:56:57","date_gmt":"2012-04-04T15:56:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1838"},"modified":"2025-05-21T14:33:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T14:33:16","slug":"where-should-photographers-invest-time-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/where-should-photographers-invest-time-online","title":{"rendered":"Where Should Photographers Invest Time Online?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>What&#8217;s Most Effective&#8230;.<\/h1>\n<h2>So many different websites\u00a0for photographers these days&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>There are many varieties\u00a0:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Fun&#8221; social media<\/strong> &#8211; casual chat on facebook, twitter, foursquare etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Serious&#8221; social media<\/strong> &#8211; Facebook Business Pages and Linked IN<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blogging<\/strong> &#8211; share your wisdom<\/li>\n<li><strong>Website galleries<\/strong> &#8211; show those shots off!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photo community sites<\/strong> &#8211; 500px, ephotozine, flickr<\/li>\n<li><strong>Youtube and video sites<\/strong> &#8211; moving piccies!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Or maybe it&#8217;s better to go out there doing SEO for your website, forget all about your photos and get people to your site ?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h1>Social Media<\/h1>\n<div>Well <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/top-social-media-trends-to-watch-for-in-2024-embracing-the-future-of-digital-engagement\/\" title=\"Top Social Media Trends to Watch for in 2024: Embracing the Future of Digital Engagement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Social Media&#8221;<\/a> will probably get the biggest audience&#8230;<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Twitter &#8211; you are &#8220;visible&#8221; to the whole world. Add on hash tags you may be seen by a specific audience too. You can even directly name people you want to see the photos! Now that&#8217;s powerful.<\/li>\n<li>Facebook for fun &#8211; you can get very active and fill your wall with lots of photos. This can lose you followers if you go too far! Also, try to choose your photos wisely &#8211; ones which evoke a reaction. Either exceptional quality, funny or caption it with an amusing\/emotional remark.<\/li>\n<li>Facebook Pages &#8211; these need promoting more and more now &#8211; i.e. you need paid adverts. I have 2500 followers on my page, posts usually reach just 25-50 of those unless they are promoted<\/li>\n<li>LINKED IN &#8211; I&#8217;d use this to promote &#8220;useful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/mastering-environmental-portrait-photography-a-guide-to-environmental-portraiture\/\" title=\"Mastering Environmental Portrait Photography: A Guide to Environmental Portraiture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"221\">blogs&#8221;<\/a> than to just post photos. Linked in can be a very dry experience, so the odd photo will brighten up the experience for people!<\/li>\n<li>Google + &#8211; the best thing ever for SEO, though no one will ever read it&#8230; apparently.<\/li>\n<li>The rest &#8211; Tumbr, Pinterest, Instagram&#8230; these all have their place, and tools like IFTTT can &#8220;share&#8221; your photos to these automatically, saving you time&#8230; worth a look.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>BLOGGING<\/h1>\n<div>We should all do this &#8211; you can get free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/improve-your-photography-skills-ways-to-better-photography\/%20\" title=\"Improve Your Photography Skills: Ways to Better Photography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"350\">blog<\/a> accounts on Blogger or get yourself a WordPress site.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>SEO is, apparently, all about &#8220;great content&#8221; these days &#8211; so creating genuinely useful lists and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/unlocking-the-magic-of-the-85mm-prime-lens-in-street-photography\/\" title=\"Unlocking the Magic of the 85mm Prime Lens in Street Photography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"222\">tips<\/a>, or even reviews and discussion, is what we are all supposed to do now.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So next time you are about to broadcast lots of photos, how about writing a short blog with a gallery of images, instead of just posting the images. You then use social media to advertise it &#8211; with one of those &#8220;click bait&#8221; titles of <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/yorkshirephotocourses.co.uk\/\" title=\"course\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">course<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Here&#8217;s why:-<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>you control <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/whalley-in-deep-water\/\" title=\"Whalley in Deep Water \u2013 Flood Photos in Full Force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">image quality &#8211; facebook compresses your photos<\/a> and makes them look terrible!<\/li>\n<li>you drive traffic to your site &#8211; more hits, more SEO<\/li>\n<li>more links to your site &#8211; every link and share to your piece generates SEO<\/li>\n<li>get a readership &#8211; if you&#8217;re pretty regular, people look out for your content!<\/li>\n<li>become an &#8220;expert&#8221; &#8211; as you build your library of articles, your credibility grows&#8230;.<\/li>\n<li>appear &#8220;busy&#8221; to the world &#8211; a busy blog gives the impression you are busy and successful, a business to hire!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Making money!<\/h1>\n<p>So if\u00a0you want to\u00a0&#8220;make money&#8221; online, where should you\u00a0spend your their &#8220;online time&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Not an easy one with stock photography being saturated\u00a0&#8211; but there are opportunities:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>on-line galleries &#8211; Photobox, red bubble etc. do tee shirts, cups, prints etc.<\/li>\n<li>affiliate marketing &#8211; get commission be recommending and linking to\u00a0other people&#8217;s products<\/li>\n<li>stock libraries &#8211; its time consuming, so pick one which has a LIGHTROOM upload plugin to speed the process<\/li>\n<li>sell guides or training &#8211; if you&#8217;ve got something to show, maybe get a course together and sell it on-line<\/li>\n<li>books &#8211; Blurb hooks up with LIGHTROOM so you can quickly create books and upload them to their library, and there are many others out there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s a challenge &#8211; the main one is being found in the first place and taken seriously<\/p>\n<h1>Over to you&#8230;<\/h1>\n<p>What do you think &#8211; have you had any especially outstanding results from a particular channel online?<\/p>\n<p>Lets see if a WordPress BLOG post can actually stimulate a discussion&#8230;!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s Most Effective&#8230;.
