More about those later<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/landscapes\/shoot-snow-frost-with-flash\/attachment\/_mg_4281\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2517\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2517\" alt=\"_MG_4281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4281.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4281.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4281-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4281-66x50.jpg 66w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4281-650x493.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4281-50x38.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Exposure settings<\/h1>\n<p>Try underexposing the background for starters &#8211; that&#8217;ll create a dark canvas on which to place your frosty plants.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these used these settings<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>ISO 100 &#8211; 400<\/li>\n<li>F8-F14<\/li>\n<li>1\/200th second<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That gave a reasonable dark background &#8211; use your metering skills to work it out, set the white snow to -1 or 0.<\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/landscapes\/shoot-snow-frost-with-flash\/attachment\/_mg_4311\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2519\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2519\" alt=\"_MG_4311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4311.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"910\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4311.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4311-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4311-55x50.jpg 55w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4311-650x592.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4311-50x46.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a>Flash Kit<\/h1>\n<p>For this I used a very basic 1-flash\u00a0set-up, including<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flash stand<\/li>\n<li>Shoot-through umbrella<\/li>\n<li>Flash head<\/li>\n<li>Manual flash trigger and receiver<\/li>\n<li>Manual flash (yongnuo)<\/li>\n<li>CTO flash gel &#8211; orange<\/li>\n<li>CTB flash gel &#8211; blue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s basically the &#8220;my first strobist&#8221; kit &#8211; you could of <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/yorkshirephotocourses.co.uk\/\" title=\"course\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">course<\/a> introduce more flashes and coloured gels to add more light.<\/p>\n<h1>How to set it up<\/h1>\n<p>This is where you apply your strobist knowledge to judge flash power, distance, how to use the umbrella etc.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" alt=\"mg_4400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/frosty-twigs\/mg_4400.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a shot showing how I had the kit set up. The stand was pretty high and the umbrella very close to the twigs.<\/p>\n<h1>Gels&#8230;.<\/h1>\n<p>The\u00a0creative\u00a0photographer may be interested in mixing the subject and background colour temperatures. In this shot I had a CTO (orange) gel on &#8211; this allows you to make the background look very cold.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" alt=\"mg_4407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/gallery\/frosty-twigs\/mg_4407.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can use a blue gel on the flash and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/creating-depth-understanding-the-importance-of-foreground-middleground-and-background\/\">create a relatively warm background<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is best done by shooting in RAW mode, the colour correcting later &#8211; using your\u00a0RAW editor&#8217;s\u00a0the &#8220;eye dropper&#8221; tool to select the white ice.<\/p>\n<h1>Examples<\/h1>\n<p>Here are a few examples from an hour in a field near Bradford.
