Horizontal rain, cold, and no shelter anywhere saw us calling a halt on proceedings before cameras broke and people got hypothermia!<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks later we returned, and wow &#8211; the results were magical!<\/p>\n<h1>Perfectly dark &#8211; no moon!<\/h1>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7901\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/CT2A4430.jpg\" alt=\"CT2A4430\" width=\"667\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/CT2A4430.jpg 667w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/CT2A4430-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/>To see the milky way you need to be somewhere with little light&#8230; which Brimham is &#8211; but also if there is no\u00a0moon , you&#8217;re on to a winner as the sky will be lots darker.<\/p>\n<p>It was a new moon which had disappeared by 7:30.<\/p>\n<h1>Techy Bit<\/h1>\n<p>With it being so dark, and there was a chance to get the milky way, we decided to expose to capture stars &#8211; so this meant:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>long exposures &#8211; 30 seconds<\/li>\n<li>wider apertures, most at F4 or F5.6<\/li>\n<li>High ISO &#8211; 800 to 1600<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This meant that the skies\u00a0had enough light in them to reveal the stars in post processing.<\/p>\n<h1>The Light Painting Bit<\/h1>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7899\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/CT2A4435.jpg\" alt=\"CT2A4435\" width=\"667\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/CT2A4435.jpg 667w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/CT2A4435-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/> With the cameras set to capture LOTS of light, the light painting was very different to usual &#8211; rather than painting for 30 seconds to\u00a0light boulders, 2-10 was ample, depending on the torch power and gel thickness.<\/p>\n<p>So most of these shots were a quick wash of light, then we stood in darkness for the rest of the 30 seconds!<\/p>\n<h1>The Pixel Stick<\/h1>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-portfolio wp-image-7999\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/CT2A4461-1.jpg\" alt=\"CT2A4461\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/CT2A4461-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.mcfade.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/CT2A4461-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We took it, but only did a couple of shots with it &#8211; still learning what to do with it to get effective shots &#8211; and in this location, it wasn&#8217;t really adding much to an already-amazing scene!<\/p>\n<h1>Sparks<\/h1>\n<p>Again, we wanted to let the sky do the talking and help the boulders with a coloruful glow, so we only did a few wire wool wheels!<\/p>\n<p>We did however do a few LED orbs &#8211; they were fun.<\/p>\n<h1>The Photos<\/h1>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-7886 gallery-columns-3
