The Surreal World of Ultra Long Exposures

Tilt Shift and 15 Stops…

I always thought 10 stops was more than enough to create surreal exposures, but discovered the Nisi 15 stop filter (which multiplies your exposure time by 32000) and found a whole new world of experimentation. To test the filter on front of the 24mm tilt Shift lens and went for a walk around Leeds city centre.

Having a little bit of maths I worked out that a filterless exposure of 1/250 of a second will give you a 2-minute exposure with the 15-stop.

So that was the approach:-

  • get an exposure of 1/250th
  • note the aperture and ISO (because you will need those)
  • put the camera into bulb mode
  • Set the aperture and ISO
  • Finally, set the timer to 2 minutes

It seems quite a foolproof system. and believe it or not, live view on the Canon 5D Mark 4 allows you to see pretty clearly the scene – so you can focus without taking the filter off!

The so and I then spent a few hours walking around the city centre finding interesting architecture to shoot, the main – thing I noticed in the photos as a lack of people and traffic in most of the scenes unless they are stationary for a minute or longer they just don’t register on the camera sensor.

It really is quite surreal to see

I’ve gone with a black and white conversion on most of these photos because I think it draws the eye towards the clouds more than it did in colour, there is a colour variation in the mix below so you can make your own mind that which you prefer.
