Leeds Iconic TETLEY BREWERY – Demolished!
The Last Orders: A Photographic Farewell to Leeds’ Iconic Tetley Brewery
The Tetley Brewery was more than just a building; it was a symbol of Leeds’ industrial heritage and a testament to nearly two centuries of brewing excellence. As the demolition cranes moved in, we took our cameras to capture the final moments of this iconic site.
A Brief History: From Humble Beginnings to Brewing Giant
Founded in 1822, the Tetley Brewery was a cornerstone of Leeds’ city centre. The original structures, some of which stood until its final days, were a testament to the city’s rich industrial history. Over the years, the brewery expanded, with the last extension completed in 2006.
Did you know? The brewery was so popular that it even opened a museum on 19th March 1994. Sadly, due to redevelopment, the museum closed its doors on 7th April 2000.
The Art of Brewing: A Look Back at Tetley’s Techniques
Tetley was renowned for its traditional brewing methods. Originally, the beer was fermented in slate Yorkshire squares dating back to the 1880s. However, modernisation took over, and by autumn 2008, these were replaced by stainless steel Yorkshire squares and conical vessels.
The Demolition: A Sad Yet Inevitable End
By 2011, nearly 200 years of brewing history came to an end. Demolition began, and the once-bustling site was reduced to rubble. The giant arms of demolition cranes tore through metal and stone as if they were paper, marking the end of an era.
McFade Photography: Capturing the Last Moments
Due to health and safety regulations, getting up close was a no-go. However, we managed to capture some striking images from outside the grounds on a sunny evening on 1st March 2012. These photographs serve as a poignant reminder of what once was a thriving part of Leeds’ cityscape.
The Afterlife: Brewery Wharf Development
Today, the site has been transformed into the Brewery Wharf development, featuring bars and restaurants. While it’s a far cry from its brewing days, the area still holds a certain charm, serving as a nod to its rich history.
The Tetley Brewery may be gone, but it’s far from forgotten. Through photographs and memories, it lives on as a symbol of Leeds’ industrial past and a reminder of the ever-changing face of our city.
