Think Smart VIP Day – Shooting Professional Event Photography in Yorkshire and Leeds

Think SMART and Tendo VIP Day

This year’s VIP event unfolded in the heart of Wakefield, bringing together a vibrant mix of familiar faces and new connections. The day was dedicated to learning from the best – former squash world number 1, Laura Massaro, and her coach (also her husband), Danny Massaro.

It was a splendid opportunity for everyone to take a step back, ponder on their business strategies for 2024, and soak in the insights required to reach the pinnacle of success, much like Laura did in her illustrious career.

The event was captured on video, necessitating our photography to adapt to the surroundings. To avoid disrupting the video with flashes, we opted to shoot in ambient light, with our cameras set around ISO 4000. This technical tweak didn’t compromise the quality, thanks to the exceptional noise reduction capabilities of DxO PhotoLab 7 – the latest and arguably the finest in its league. Additionally, I employed the toning feature to infuse the images with a subtle, cooler tone, enhancing their visual appeal and complementing the event’s atmosphere.

The Magic of Lighting and Angles

Ever wonder why some photos just look better? It’s all down to the light and the angle. Event photographers are wizards when it comes to finding that perfect spot, making your event look just a bit more magical.

Sometimes we can’t use our lighting, usually because it affects video recordings, so we then rely on getting into positions to make the best of the available light.

Yorkshire’s got it all – rustic charm, city glitz, and everything in between. It’s a photographer’s dream, really. We’ve shot in old wooden rooms and ultra modern suites, Yorkshire has it all.

Capturing the True Essence of Northern Celebrations

There’s something unique about events up North – they’re full of warmth and character. And a photographer who knows Yorkshire can really bring that out in their photos.

Why Choose a Leeds-based Event Photographer?

Leeds is not just any city – it’s a hub of creativity and style, making it a prime spot for top-notch event photographers.

Access to a Range of Venues

Whether your event is in a chic urban space or a more traditional setting, a local photographer will know just how to make the most of your chosen venue.

Building a Relationship with Your Photographer

It’s not just about the photos – it’s about having someone who gets what you’re after and makes the whole experience a breeze.

The Nuts and Bolts: What Equipment Does an Event Photographer Need?

It’s not just about having a fancy camera. Event photography requires a whole kit and caboodle to ensure top-quality shots.

The Right Camera for the Job

A good event photographer will have a camera that’s up to the task – one that can handle low light, fast movement, and all the challenges that event photography throws at them.

I use 2 Canon 5D mark 4 and an R5 – so the very best DSLR and the latest high end mirrorless. Both handle low light well, the R5 has the most amazing focussing system available for low light too.

Lenses, Lights, and More

It’s not just the camera – lenses, lighting, and even the right bag can make a world of difference. A photographer equipped with the right gear can make even the dullest room look like the Ritz.

I usually use a 16-35mm lens for wide shots and the trusty 70-200 to capture things from a distance – probably 80% 70-200 with a few wide shots thrown in

The Importance of Backup Equipment

In event photography, there’s no room for error. Having backup equipment means that even if something goes kaput, the show goes on.

People often think I’m moving in when they see my huge camera case…. plenty of spares in that!

Event Photography: Not Just a Picture, but a Story

Event photography is about telling the story of your event. Each photo is a piece of the puzzle, coming together to give a full picture of the day or night.

From Start to Finish: Capturing the Full Event

A good event photographer isn’t just there for the main event – they’re there from the get-go, snapping the setup, the arrivals, and all the bits in between.

The Emotions Behind the Event

It’s the emotions that make an event, and capturing those – the joy, the surprise, the pride – is what makes for truly great event photography.

The Little Details That Make the Big Picture

It’s often the little things – a glance, a decoration, a moment of laughter – that really bring an event to life in photos.
